Sony: PS6 development is on schedule, investments will start next fiscal year

Sony announced that the development of the next-generation console, commonly referred to as the PS6, is on schedule. The statement was made during the report on the results of the second quarter of the 2026 fiscal year. At the same time, the corporation revealed fresh data on the PS5: sales are growing but noticeably lag behind the pace of the PS4 at a similar stage of its lifecycle.

The plans were shared by Sony's Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao. The next fiscal year, which for Sony begins in April 2027, will be a period of active preparation for the launch of the new platform. "In the next fiscal year, we intend to further increase user engagement and strengthen monetization by releasing strong games and expanding our service. We also plan to make significant progress in preparing for the next-generation platform," she said.

During the Q&A session, Lin Tao noted that the research and development of the new platform are progressing on schedule, and reiterated: "The development itself is going according to plan." In response to another question, the CFO explained that investments in the new platform will begin in the next fiscal year and continue further. "For future growth, we must pay great attention to our new platform. We must make the necessary investments for this. But we also need to maintain the stability of our platform and consider how rationally we can invest in it," she added.

Sony promised to reveal details about the next-generation console at an "appropriate" time. The company did not specify the timing of the announcement or release.

Regarding the PS5, Lin Tao acknowledged that console sales are "gradually declining, as expected at this stage of the lifecycle." However, she stated that "the PlayStation platform continues to steadily expand and grow." PS5 shipments have reached 97.9 million consoles to date.
