Uzbekistan and South Korea have agreed to jointly implement artificial intelligence in industry. Following the negotiations between Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol in Seoul, the parties exchanged a package of 13 agreements and memorandums covering transport, defense, healthcare, and digital technologies.
At the leaders' meeting, the formation of promising investment projects worth $12 billion was announced. Additionally, the parties agreed to work on the procurement of eight high-speed trains by Tashkent and the construction of a national biobank.
A key direction of the partnership has become the joint development of AI. One of the memorandums provides for the expansion of cooperation in digital industry and the implementation of AI-based innovations: knowledge exchange, training of personnel, and infrastructure creation. At the financial level, the Export-Import Bank of Korea and the Uzbek Ministry of Investments, Industry and Trade agreed to establish a mechanism for searching and financing projects in six strategic areas. Tashkent has identified the extraction of critically important minerals, AI, and the creation of data centers, smart cities, an industrial zone for Korean businesses, pharmaceuticals with biotechnology, as well as food and beauty sectors as priorities. The industrial base that Uzbekistan has been building up in recent years serves as a foundation: there are over 700 enterprises with Korean participation operating in the republic.
