XRP Ledger Developers Fix Lending Protocol Before Launch

XRP Ledger developers are revising a new lending protocol even before a single loan has been issued: a second amendment, LendingProtocolV1_1, has been added to the original LendingProtocol amendment, which is still queued for validator voting. Instead of waiting for the first version to be activated and then fixing it, the developers have published the revision in advance. Both amendments are now listed as mandatory in the documentation, meaning the network will adopt the corrected version from the start.

This approach reflects the mechanics of changes in the XRP Ledger: new features and fixes are introduced as amendments that need to gain at least 80% support from trusted validators over two weeks. Since the original code has not yet passed this threshold, the second amendment allows the avoidance of launching a knowingly problematic system on the main network and rushing to fix it later.

The protocol itself is designed for institutional lending, rather than the collateral and liquidation model common in DeFi. It relies on off-chain underwriting of borrowers and a "first-loss capital" buffer, which the lending broker provides to absorb the first losses from defaults, instead of automatic on-chain collateral. Issuers retain compliance tools, including the ability to freeze accounts or recall funds.

Caution is linked to a recent incident: developers disclosed and fixed a critical bug in the XRP Ledger payment engine that could have allowed an attacker to create fake XRP. The vulnerability remained in the system for about ten years until it was discovered by a researcher. The revision of the lending code before launch fits into a more cautious approach to new features.

The lending protocol is part of a broader development of lending and DeFi capabilities in the XRP Ledger, which, as Ripple and others have long stated, lacked financial infrastructure.
