Bitcoin Tops JPMorgan's Asset Return Forecast for 2027

JPMorgan Asset Management recently published its long-term investment forecasts for 2027 – the 31st edition of the report upon which institutional investors base their models. The document presents thirteen asset classes ranked by expected average returns over the next decade. Bitcoin takes the top spot: JPMorgan forecasts an impressive 10% annual return over 10–15 years. In second place are real estate investment funds with 8.2%, small companies at 7.7%, and large US companies at 7.5%. Gold stands at 5.5%. Over a decade, $100 in Bitcoin will turn into $259 compared to $206 for large-cap stocks and $171 for gold.

This is the first time Bitcoin has appeared in the report, and this is more significant than the numbers. Pension fund consultants and financial advisors build their models on such assumptions, and for the past thirty editions, Bitcoin's return expectations were undefined. Now it has a figure from JPMorgan at the top of the table. Bitcoin's arithmetic return is 20.9%, while the compound return is 10%. The 10.9-point difference is explained by pure volatility. For large companies, this gap is 1.45 points. Bitcoin's annual volatility reaches 55%, whereas for stocks, it's 18%. The forecast doesn't position Bitcoin as the best asset compared to stocks: it shows that Bitcoin offers higher returns but requires greater resilience to market fluctuations. Those who have experienced the ups and downs of cryptocurrency cycles over the past decade will agree with this.

Two points stand out particularly for cryptocurrencies. The argument of depreciation has lost its loudest support: JPMorgan called this bullish case "far from the truth" and placed gold closer to the bottom of the table. Bitcoin is no longer compared to gold – it is comparable to real estate funds and small companies, which are part of a normal portfolio, and emerges as the winner. Note the context as well: 10-year bond yields exceed 5%, and JPMorgan's forecasts for global bonds are at their highest in two decades – yet the bank still placed Bitcoin at the top. A 10% figure won't make anyone rich by Twitter feed standards, but it is now the highest value in JPMorgan's book. Institutional investors who needed permission to model Bitcoin have received it. Now we wait for the market to catch up.
