CJ Desai Resigns as CEO of MongoDB for Meta – Shares Plummet by $6 Billion

On September 28, 2026, at 8:30 AM, MongoDB CEO CJ Desai resigned to join Meta, leaving tens of millions of dollars in unvested compensation on the table. As a result, MongoDB shareholders lost over $6 billion in market capitalization just eight hours after his departure. The company's shares plummeted immediately: the price per MDB share, traded on Nasdaq, fell from $401 to $360 in just one minute, resulting in a $3 billion loss in 60 seconds. The close of trading showed an even more significant decline – by 4:00 PM, shares had dropped by 18.5%, equating to more than $6 billion compared to the previous day.

Desai's resignation occurred on the eve of the highly anticipated MongoDB Investor Day, which begins in New York at 11:00 AM. Wall Street analysts promptly updated their ratings on MDB shares, pointing to negative implications. "The resignation is clearly negative and complicates the situation," wrote Bank of America analysts. "The news raises more questions than answers," commented William Blair.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Meta, reacted positively to Desai's transition, stating, "I am thrilled that Chirantan 'CJ' Desai will join Meta as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer and report directly to me." Desai's new role will focus on implementing Meta's AI technologies for business.

Leaving MongoDB, Desai left behind a promising compensation package that included a $2.5 million cash bonus and $15 million in restricted stock, which was to be distributed over eight quarters, covering 44,096 shares. Only two tranches were vested before his departure, while the remaining six, valued at $11.25 million, were forfeited.

Additionally, Desai forfeited a $17.5 million award that required the average closing price of MDB shares over 60 days to be at least $375 per share. There were higher price requirements to unlock larger tranches, including $400, $475, and $600. The first tranche was to be vested on January 1, 2027, if Desai had continued with the company until that date. The total amount of forfeited compensation could amount to approximately $25 million.
