Coinbase Develops Financial Account for AI Agents

On September 9, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced that the company is creating a financial account designed for AI agents. Coinbase's documentation indicates that users can already utilize features to manage isolated wallets and execute transactions with cryptocurrencies and stocks. The new product, while lacking a set launch date, is aimed at enhancing AI access to financial instruments.

The service, called Coinbase for Agents, includes support for isolated wallets, cryptocurrency trading, derivatives, and stocks. Users can restrict agent access by funding a separate wallet with set permissions. The platform already supports over 900 currency pairs for spot trading and provides portfolio monitoring and conversion functions between USDC and US dollars. Additionally, API connections for agents allow for the movement of assets between authorized Coinbase wallets, although such operations cannot be conducted to external blockchain addresses.

A protocol x402 is also under development, which will enable users and machines to make payments for online resources without traditional ordering procedures. Coinbase reports that since the launch of this protocol, over 100 million x402 payments have been processed on the Base and Solana platforms. Despite the numerous capabilities, Coinbase emphasizes that users remain responsible for the actions of their AI agents, as they may misinterpret instructions or perform unexpected operations. Current challenges include potential rule violations, as reported by independent researchers, highlighting the importance of a cautious approach to using AI in financial transactions.
