On Friday, October 30, Bitcoin options worth $11 billion expire: what does it mean

Approximately $11 billion in Bitcoin options are set to expire on Friday, October 30, on Deribit, involving around 135,000 BTC – about a third of the exchange's open interest in Bitcoin options. Bitcoin is trading around $81,500 the day after the Federal Reserve maintained the rate, with two officials voting for an increase. Even those not trading options are affected: contract sellers buy or sell actual Bitcoin for hedging as the price moves, which can amplify fluctuations without news.

What is expiring

An option gives the right, but not the obligation, to buy (call) or sell (put) Bitcoin at a fixed price by a certain date. The Friday batch includes about 88,700 calls and 46,500 puts. This is approximately 70% more than the $6.4 billion that expired in August. The put-to-call ratio is 0.52: calls dominate almost two to one, indicating optimism about the price. The nominal value of $11 billion is the value of the contracts at the current price, not the money changing hands. About 86% of the contracts are out of the money, and settlement at the current level will affect approximately $130 million – about 1% of the nominal value.

Why it matters

Traders monitor max pain – the price at which the most contracts expire worthless, and sellers pay the least. Deribit estimates it at $78,000, roughly $3,500 below the market; this is a description of positioning, not a forecast of the settlement price. The largest call bets are at $95,000 and $100,000, 16% and 23% above the current price; the largest put cluster is at $70,000, 14% below. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday maintained the rate at 3.75–4% with a vote of 10 to 2, with two advocating for an increase; the yield on 10-year Treasuries closed at 5.05%.

What's next

For the Friday expiration, more trades have occurred in the last 24 hours than for any other Bitcoin options expiration on Deribit – over 6,000 contracts. The batch is smaller than the $15 billion in March but roughly three times larger than the $3.6 billion in April 2021. The next major expiration is December 25, involving around 135,500 BTC, approximately the same size and about two weeks after the Federal Reserve meeting on December 8–9.
