Google Starts Paying Publishers for Content in AI Responses

Google has expanded its pilot program, under which publishers are starting to receive payments for content used in artificial intelligence responses, such as the Gemini chatbot. Now, under the AI Contribution Pilot, publishers will be able to track their earnings through a special widget in Google Search Console, which displays monthly payment amounts and a history of credits.

It is important to note that payments will be based not on the volume of content usage, but on its value, as determined by the company itself. This means that money will be credited when Google assesses that specific material has made a significant contribution to the formation of AI responses, including AI Overviews and AI Mode search. According to reports, several dozen publications have received offers to join the AI Contribution Pilot. Google does not disclose the exact number of participants. Publishers currently involved in the pilot are receiving only basic information about the payment mechanisms and hope for greater transparency in the future.

However, some participants in the program express concerns about the financial benefits. One publisher stated that the initial amounts were insignificant compared to their traditional advertising revenues. Another publication clarified that the proposed compensation does not justify their participation. Moreover, participants are aware of the risk that such measures could weaken their negotiating positions with Google, as the company could refer to the existing payment system as proof of compensation for the use of their materials in AI responses. Luke Stillman, managing director of consulting firm Madison and Wall, added that such an initiative also helps Google reduce legal and reputational risks associated with the use of third-party content, believing that such payments may become the norm in the industry, emphasizing the value of content for generated AI responses.
