The Harry Potter Series May Become One of HBO's Most Expensive Projects

The new adaptation of Harry Potter could become one of the most expensive television projects in HBO's history. According to Deadline, the budget for the first season is estimated to reach $201 million, with average expenses per episode potentially amounting to around $25.2 million. This estimate is based on the financial statements of the British company Plum Jam Productions, which is responsible for producing the series. According to documents for 2025, its revenue amounted to £130.6 million, approximately $175 million. In 2024, when preparations for filming began, the figure was £18.4 million. In total, revenue for the two years reached approximately $201 million.

However, the company's financial figures do not necessarily reflect only the expenses for Harry Potter: in the past, it has also been involved in the production of other projects. Therefore, this is an approximate estimate. If the calculations are correct, the new series will fall into the same category as the final season of Game of Thrones, which reportedly cost around $15 million per episode, and The Last of Us. A source familiar with the production notes that a significant portion of the expenses is for the first season: large-scale sets built at Warner Bros. studio are planned to be used throughout all seven seasons. Therefore, the cost of individual episodes may decrease in the future.

The world premiere of Harry Potter will take place on December 25. In the description of the video, Amediateka clarified that the series will be released in December 2026 in the HBO Max section in Kazakhstan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, and Tajikistan.
