Sony Offers PS5 Owners Up to $400 for Used Consoles

Sony has started sending notifications to PlayStation 5 owners in the US with an offer to sell used consoles for up to $400. The buyback is handled by the French refurbished electronics platform Back Market, and payments are made in cash, not as PlayStation Store credits.
Users of the gaming forum ResetEra were the first to notice the offer. In the notification dated November 2, 2026, Sony offers PS5 owners to take advantage of the buyback program if they no longer use the console.
However, the maximum amount is not guaranteed. According to the notification terms, the $400 benchmark is based on previous evaluations of a standard PS5 in Grade 0 condition with a minimum set of 2 controllers. These offers were formed between August 23 and September 22, 2026.
The actual value depends on the console model, built-in storage capacity, condition of the body and components, and the package contents. Users can preliminarily evaluate the device through Back Market, after which they send it for inspection. The final offer is formed based on the condition of the received console.
If the device's characteristics differ from those stated, the company may offer a different amount. After agreeing on the terms and completing the inspection, the seller receives the payment.
The PlayStation 5 was released in November 2020 and is approaching its sixth anniversary since launch. According to official Sony data, as of June 30, 2026, global shipments of the console exceeded 95 million units.
At the time of publication, reports of the new offer were coming from users in the US. Sony has not yet announced an expansion of the notifications to other regions or specified the duration of the $400 offer.
