The UK is witnessing the formation of a two-speed labor market model, where a general decline in hiring contrasts with unprecedented demand for artificial intelligence competencies. According to Indeed platform analytics, since the beginning of 2026, the total number of vacancies in the country has decreased by 11%, but the share of ads requiring neural network skills has reached a record 9.4%. This trend is most pronounced in sectors such as human resources management, marketing and finance, where employers optimize their staff, but are actively looking for specialists capable of implementing automated solutions. At the same time, the interest of applicants in such positions has increased sevenfold since the introduction of ChatGPT, which indicates a structural transformation of staff qualification requirements.

Macroeconomic indicators point to systemic pressure on the British economy: Employer activity is now 32% below the pre-pandemic level in February 2020, while in Europe and the United States this figure exceeds historical values. Wage growth slowed to 3.9%, updating a four-year low. The downturn has affected most traditional industries, including retail and hospitality, while positive trends remain exclusively in technology, engineering and healthcare. In particular, the number of vacancies for software developers increased by 14%, with the main increase provided by positions directly related to the integration of machine learning algorithms and requiring high expertise.

Against the background of these changes, young professionals have become the most vulnerable group, for whom access to the initial level of employment is significantly limited. The number of graduate offers decreased by 7% year-on-year, and more than a million citizens aged 16 to 24 are not enrolled in education or employment. As a response, the government announced a large-scale reform of technical education, involving early specialized training for schoolchildren from the age of 14. The global scale of this trend is confirmed by a PwC study covering 27 countries: professions where AI acts as a decision-making tool show job growth and salary increases 42% faster than average, while the premium for having specialized AI competencies in the global market has reached 62%.
