Airbnb to Launch Travel AI Agent in the First Half of 2027

Airbnb plans to start implementing its own AI travel agent in the first half of 2027. The company disclosed the timeline and capabilities of the upcoming service in its Q3 2026 report, published on November 5. The new tool is designed for finding accommodations, planning trips, and making bookings directly within the platform.

Unlike a traditional chatbot, the agent will use a visual interface that adapts based on the user's request. To achieve this, Airbnb is developing a library of hundreds of specialized components, including maps, photos, calendars, itineraries, and tools for comparing offers.

For example, when searching for accommodations, the system will be able to display suitable options on a map, compare their features, and help coordinate choices with other trip participants. Users will not only receive recommendations but also perform actions within the app.

The company intends to base personalization on nearly 20 years of experience working with travelers and property owners. Airbnb plans to consider search characteristics, guest preferences, and interaction history with the platform.

The future agent's capabilities will not be limited to bookings. The company plans to provide assistance with changing stay dates, payments, refunds, and finding alternative accommodations through it. Access to 24/7 support for security issues is also planned.

In the future, Airbnb intends to integrate booking accommodations and hotels, local entertainment, additional services, and other travel elements into the agent. However, the timeline for the availability of all these features has not yet been determined.

AI has already helped Airbnb reduce support costs

The new travel agent will become a separate direction for the development of AI tools that Airbnb uses in customer service.

As of the end of Q3 2026, about 40% of support inquiries were resolved without employee involvement. In Q2, the figure was approximately one-third. The current AI assistant supports more than 50 languages, and in the US, the company is expanding its capabilities to voice support.

At the same time, support costs per booking have decreased by more than 17% year-over-year. Airbnb attributes a significant part of this reduction to improvements in the AI assistant, although other operational factors also influence costs.

In Q3, the company's revenue grew by 19% to $4.87 billion. The number of booked nights and places increased by 16% to 155 million.

However, the economic impact of the future AI agent has not yet been assessed. The company has not disclosed the costs of its development, the expected impact on the number of bookings, or the timeline for full deployment.

Implementation is planned to begin in the first half of 2027. The availability of the service in specific countries and the final set of features will depend on further launch stages.
