AMD announced the acquisition of AI startup World Labs, specializing in spatial intelligence technologies. The deal is valued at $8.2 billion, with the transaction to be settled in AMD shares. The agreement is expected to close by the end of 2026. World Labs was founded by artificial intelligence specialist Fei-Fei Li and develops models capable of creating and simulating physical environments based on text, images, and video. This approach differs from architectures primarily focused on processing language data and is designed for tasks related to understanding space and the environment.
Upon completion of the deal, Li will take on the roles of Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer at AMD. AMD CEO Lisa Su stated that creating computing platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models evolve.
The company believes that the development of new AI directions requires computing platforms capable of adapting to the changing characteristics of models. AMD also associates the acquisition of World Labs with the growing demand for infrastructure for so-called physical AI and robotics. According to the chip manufacturer, these areas form more diverse requirements for computing systems, and World Labs' technologies can provide AMD with additional expertise in developing the corresponding hardware and software infrastructure.
Another aspect of the AMD deal is the support of an open artificial intelligence ecosystem. This involves models and software tools, some components of which are available to developers for study, modification, and further use. World Labs expects to gain additional computing and engineering resources for its research after merging with AMD. Thus, the deal brings together a developer of specialized spatial AI models with a computing solutions manufacturer that is expanding its presence in areas related to robotics, physical environments, and new types of AI applications.
