Nvidia's Market Capitalization Reaches $5.4 Trillion

Nvidia's market capitalization reached approximately $5.4 trillion as of the end of September 2026, nearly $2 trillion higher than the combined value of the Russell 2000 small-cap index. In other words, a single chip manufacturer is worth more than all small companies in America combined.

Over the past twelve months, Nvidia generated about $193 billion in net income. Approximately 2,000 companies within the Russell 2000 collectively lost $13 billion during the same period. Nvidia's revenue for fiscal 2026 was $215.9 billion – a 65% increase from the previous year. The data center business alone brought in $89 billion for the quarter, which would be a significant annual figure for most Fortune 500 companies. Nvidia first surpassed the $5 trillion mark in October 2025 and has continued to grow since then.

The Russell 2000 is a standard benchmark for U.S. small-cap stocks. It includes companies that are large enough to be publicly traded but too small to attract the attention of institutional investors focused on mega-cap stocks: regional banks, small manufacturers, mid-tier retail chains, and a long tail of businesses that form the connective tissue of the American economy.

Part of the gap can be explained by structural reasons. Small companies often carry floating-rate debt, which has become expensive as interest rates have risen. They have less pricing power than larger players and often lack the scale to absorb rising costs without compressing margins. The AI boom has made the gap even more pronounced, directing capital and talent into a narrow band of tech companies rather than distributing them widely.
