Ripple has partnered with Privy, a company owned by Stripe, to add AI payments and embedded wallets to the XRP Ledger. Developers will be able to create payment applications with XRP, the RLUSD stablecoin, and other network assets without the need to manage private keys. The integration is focused on agent trading: AI agents will be able to autonomously own funds, conduct transactions, and pay for services. Privy's programmable wallets handle wallet creation, transaction approval, and embedded crypto payments within applications.
At the center of the deal is the open payment protocol x402 for automated settlements between programs. An AI agent can purchase access to data, settle in XRP or RLUSD, and immediately receive the service. According to Ripple, the network has already processed about 13 million payments from agents—approximately 25% of XRP Ledger's activity. RippleX's head of engineering, J. Ayo Akinyele, reported this in October: the number of automated transactions increased from about 1 million in July to 13 million. According to XRPL AI Hub by t54, more than 14.3 million transactions had accumulated by Wednesday with 169 registered merchants.
However, the total value of transfers is significantly lower than the number of operations suggests: the dashboard recorded about 6,991 XRP and 12,752 RLUSD. Many payments are very small, corresponding to the payment of individual requests by software rather than large financial transfers.
Ripple began offering developers tools for such payments in June: agents can create wallets, check balances, and pay for services in XRP or RLUSD. In September, the suite was expanded under the payment standard developed by Stripe and the Tempo blockchain, including the ability to fund recurring requests in XRP instead of settling each one separately.
In the Tuesday release, it was stated that the companies will deepen integration, including policy control and tools to cover users' network fees. However, creating a wallet within the application still requires a funding step: according to Privy's documentation, a new XRP Ledger account must first receive the network's minimum reserve—currently 1 XRP. This means someone must provide this XRP to activate the account, even if the client only wants to send dollar-pegged stablecoins.
